The Smell Book

Part One

1st July 2024

Happy July!

And a warm welcome to a new series of aromatherapy blends which you can use to help deal with anxiety, lift your mood, concentrate better or drift off to a peaceful sleep.

This week, we're looking at blends to soothe the nerves and leave you feeling uplifted.

Essential Oil One: Bergamot

Bergamot is the number one oil for helping with nervousness and anxiety. A number of studies have shown a reduction in stress and anxiety in both animals and humans when exposed to bergamot oil. This zesty, slightly floral oil, while uplifting, can also be used in bedtime blends thanks to the relaxing effects.

Essential Oil Two: Sweet Orange

My all-time favourite oil. Pressed from the peel of fresh oranges, this uplifting citrus scent helps to reduce anxiety and makes you feel more energised. It also has anti-microbial properties which see it used in blends for cleaning and even helps with acne when used on the skin (diluted in a carrier oil - never use sweet orange oil neat on your skin!)

Essential Oil Three: Peppermint

Although you may not necessarily think of mixing citrus and mint scents, peppermint blends seamlessly with bergamot and sweet orange to create an uplifting blend that will leave you feeling calm but rejuvenated. Peppermint oil is well known for its positive effects on digestion, relieving nausea and relaxing the smooth muscles of the GI tract, when taken orally (through peppermint oil capsules or peppermint tea) or when used in abdominal massage blends. It has even been promoted as helping improve cognitive and athletic performance in some trials.

The Blend

Blends can be used in nasal inhalers, diffusers (reduce the number of drops - see below) or on a tissue or piece of cloth. You can inhale these vapours whenever you feel you need something to calm your anxiety and give you a boost of energy:

Nasal inhalers and tissue/cloth inhalation:

8 drops Sweet Orange

5 drops Bergamot

3 drops Peppermint

Diffusers

3 drops Sweet Orange

2 drops Bergamot

1 drop Peppermint

I hope you find this blend helpful, and it helps to set you up for a relaxing, energising week ahead!
